Speaking at the conference, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Tien affirmed that non-communicable diseases seriously affect the community health and the socio-economic development of the country due to the number of people suffering from diseases and disability and mortality caused by diseases are high. Effective prevention of these diseases will limit the number of sufferers in the community; prevent disability and premature death; and reduce overload in hospitals. Enhancing primary health care is an effective determinant in preventing non-communicable diseases.
The Minister asked the Conference to focus on the following issues: The annual action plan of projects on control of hypertension, diabetes, cancer, chronic lung disease has to follow the content guided in the National Strategy to achieve the proposed objectives by 2025. Results and lessons from the projects should be converted to national recommendations and guidelines, especially for effective interventions - costs for early detection, treatment, and management of non-communicable diseases so that the localities have evidences for implementation; Strengthening the health system is an important factor in preventing non-communicable diseases focusing on capacity improvement for district and commune health, with the support and transfer of technology from the provincial level to ensure that people can have the access to basic services for the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases at the grassroots level; Non-infectious diseases would affect the development so the prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases should be seen as an investment in national development programs.
In annual Scientific Conference on Non-Communicable Diseases Prevention this year there were 35 scientific reports from five disciplines including Cardiology, Cancer, Respiratory, Diabetes and Nutrition presented by top experts.
Discussion at the conference will focus on measures to prevent the risk of non-communicable diseases. Health education communication about the key messages from this important scientific conference will be enhanced in the community in the near future including recommendations on nutrition and lifestyles. In addition, updating treatment protocols is discussed in the conference and they would continue to be trained in the health system MOH and Vietnam General Medical Association.
